Currently, asset classes in Emerging Market Equity( EEM , VWO ) , Reits( IYR , VNQ , ICF ) and Fixed Income( AGG , BND ) are doing relatively well. These asset classes are available to Vanguard 62 participants.
Fidelity now makes trading 25 iShares ETFs for free. These ETFs cover complete US equity sizes and styles (large/mid/small caps and growth/blend/value styles). It covers international equity markets well too. In additon, it has good fixed income ETFs. The missing major asset classes are REITs and commodities. We hope those will be made free too. A plan called Fidelity Commission Efficient ETFs extends this plan by including several addtional ETFs (which cost $7.95 flat commission per trade).

Currently, asset classes in Foreign Equity( EFA , VEU ) , Emerging Market Equity( EEM , VWO ) and Fixed Income( AGG , BND ) are doing relatively well. These asset classes are available to Fidelity 25 Commission Free ETFs participants.
To summarize:
- Vanguard 62 Commission Free ETFs plan participants have seen returns in the 8-13% range for a moderate portfolio with strategic and tactical asset allocation based on having a five asset class portfolio.
- Fidelity 25 Commission Free ETFs plan participants have seen returns in the 7-11% range for a moderate portfolio with strategic and tactical asset allocation based on having a five asset class portfolio.
Given the greater number and greater diversification, the Vanguard plan would be the one most likely to continue to deliver better risk adjusted returns and so is declared the winner and moves on to the final round

Bank of America 401K Plan: Well Designed for Its Employees
10/24/2010
Americans rely on more and more retirement accounts such as 401K and IRAs to fund their future retirement. Financial professionals are helping company plan sponsors and participants in retirement investing. It is thus interesting to look at some of 401k plans in these financial institutions and see how well they serve their employees. In this article, we will discuss The Bank of America 401(k) Plan.
Bank of America Corporation (BAC), a financial holding company, provides banking and nonbanking financial services and products to individual consumers, small- and middle-market businesses, large corporations, and governments in the United States and internationally. Bank of America acquired Merill Lynch in 2008.
The Bank of America 401(k) Plan's 401K plan consists of 55 funds. These funds enable participants to gain exposure to 4 major assets: Fixed Income , US Equity , Foreign Equity , Emerging Market Equity . The list of minor asset classes covered:
Conservative Allocation: AOK DIVERSIFIED PACIFIC/ASIA: EPP , VPL , GMF , PAF EQUITY: VTI,VT Equity Energy: ITE,IXC , IPW , DBE , RYE , DKA Foreign Large Blend: EFA , VEU , GWL , PFA Foreign Large Growth: EFG High Yield Bond: HYG , JNK , PHB Intermediate Government: IEI , VGIT , ITE Intermediate-Term Bond: AGG,CIU , BIV,BND LARGE BLEND: IVV,IYY,IWV , VTI,VV , SPY , DLN , RSP , SCHX LARGE GROWTH: IVW,IWZ,JKE , VUG , ELG , QQQQ , RPG , SCHG LARGE VALUE: IVE,IWW,JKF , VTV , ELV , PWV , RPV , SCHV MID-CAP BLEND: IJH,IWR,JKG , VO , MDY,EMM , PJG , DON,EZM , MVV Mid-Cap Growth: IJK,IWP , VOT , EMG , PWJ , RFG , UKW MID-CAP VALUE: IJJ,IWS,JKI , VOE , EMV , PWP , RFV , UVU Moderate Allocation: AOM Multisector Bond: AGG,GBF , BND , LAG PACIFIC/ASIA EX-JAPAN STK: EPP,AAXJ , GMF , PAF , DND Retirement Income: Short-Term Bond: CSJ , BSV,VCSH SMALL BLEND: IJR,IWM,JKJ , VB , DSC , PJM , DES , SAA,UWM , SCHA Target Date Funds
It is interesting to see that the Real Estate Investment Trusts (REITs) funds are missing in the offering even though the bank handles millions of commercial and residential mortgages. As of Oct 15, 2010, this plan investment choice is rated as above average based on MyPlanIQ Plan Rating methodology that was designed to measure how effective a plan's available investment funds are . It has the following detailed ratings:
Diversification -- Rated as above average (80%) Fund Quality -- Rated as below average (24%) Portfolio Building -- Rated as great (85%) Overall Rating: above average (65%)
It is worth noting that funds in the plan are not impressive at all. This is clearly reflected in the following performance chart and table. The chart and table below show the historical performance of moderate model portfolios employing strategic and tactical asset allocation strategies ( SAA and TAA , both provided by MyPlanIQ). For comparison purpose, we also include the moderate model portfolios of a typical five asset SIB (Simpler Is Better) plan . This SIB plan has the following candidate index funds and their ETFs equivalent:
Fixed Income:( AGG or BND ) Foreign Equity:( EFA or VEU ) Emerging Market Equity:( EEM or VWO ) US Equity:( SPY or VTI ) Performance chart (as of Oct 15, 2010)
Performance table (as of Oct 15, 2010)
Clearly, employees in Bank of America can be better served with higher quality fun d picking and more diversification -- adding Real Estate Investment Trusts (REITs) is one option. We would hope financial professionals can utilize their know how to better serve themselves.

Qualcomm Modern Company with Old Style Retirement Plan
10/19/2010
Retirement investing is an integral part of American personal finance. With $8.9 trillion in over 800 thousand retirement plans, millions of Americans rely on their 401K for their retirement. This article is part of a series of case studies we are conducting for various 401K plans. In this article, we will discuss how participants in Qualcomm 401(k) Plan can achieve reasonable investment results using asset allocation strategies. We will also discuss how those portfolios are positioned in today’s market environment.
Qualcomm is a 2009 FORTUNE 500® company delivering digital wireless communications products and services based on CDMA and other technologies. Qualcomm serves the global wireless industry enabling the convergence of mobile communications and consumer electronics, making next-generation wireless devices and services more personal, affordable and accessible to people everywhere.
Qualcomm 401(k) Plan's 401K plan consists of 13 funds. These funds enable participants to gain exposure to 3 major assets: US Equity , Fixed Income , Foreign Equity .
For a modern company, three asset classes is rather old style. As we have seen in a previous article five and six asset classes outperform three asset class portfolios. Having said that, each class has a good set of alternatives allowing smart fund selection to maximize the returns of the portfolio.
The list of minor asset classes covered:
Foreign Large Blend: EFA , VEU , GWL , PFA Intermediate Government: IEI , VGIT , ITE Intermediate-Term Bond: AGG,CIU , BIV,BND LARGE BLEND: IVV,IYY,IWV , VTI,VV , SPY , DLN , RSP , SCHX LARGE GROWTH: IVW,IWZ,JKE , VUG , ELG , QQQQ , RPG , SCHG LARGE VALUE: IVE,IWW,JKF , VTV , ELV , PWV , RPV , SCHV MID-CAP BLEND: IJH,IWR,JKG , VO , MDY,EMM , PJG , DON,EZM , MVV Retirement Income: Small Growth: IJT,IWO,JKK , VBK , DSG , PWT , RZG , UKK SMALL VALUE: IJS,IWN,JKL , VBR , DSV , PWY , RZV , UVT WORLD STOCK: IOO , VT
As of Oct 15, 2010, this plan investment choice is rated as above average based on MyPlanIQ Plan Rating methodology that was designed to measure how effective a plan's available investment funds are . It has the following detailed ratings:
Diversification -- Rated as below average (31%) Fund Quality -- Rated as great (87%) Portfolio Building -- Rated as great (91%) Overall Rating: above average (72%)
The chart and table below show the historical performance of moderate model portfolios employing strategic and tactical asset allocation strategies ( SAA andTAA , both provided by MyPlanIQ). For comparison purpose, we also include the moderate model portfolios of a typical five asset SIB (Simpler Is Better) plan . This SIB plan has the following candidate index funds and their ETFs equivalent:
Fixed Income:( AGG or BND ) Foreign Equity:( EFA or VEU ) US Equity:( SPY or VTI ) Performance chart (as of Oct 15, 2010)
Performance table (as of Oct 15, 2010)
It is unusual for a strategic asset allocation strategy to beat a tactical asset allocation strategy. In this case, the QCOM strategic asset allocation has better returns thatthe three core SIB tactical asset allocation.
This shows the benefit of having multiple funds in a single class as this allows the participant to rotate in sub classes that are performing well. Currently, asset classes in Fixed Income( AGG , BND ) , Foreign Equity( EFA , VEU ) and US Equity( SPY , VTI ) are doing relatively well. These asset classes are available to Qualcomm 401(k) Plan participants.
To summarize, Qualcomm 401(k) Plan plan participants can achieve reasonable investment returns by adopting asset allocation strategies that are tailored to their risk profiles. Currently, the tactical asset allocation strategy indicates overweighing on fixed income , us equity and foreign equity funds.
If Qualcomm were to add another two asset classes, they would have a very strong retirement plan.
