Year-End Rally: Both U.S. and International REITs Stand Out

12/30/2010 0 comments

Risky assets including stocks, REITs and commodities have inched up practically every day in the past week (see weekly returns here). U.S. REITs (IYR) recovered from a dip and now backed on the second spot among dividend ETFs. International REITs (RWX) firmly retained its top position.

Here is the annualized yield table for the dividend stock ETFs that MyPlanIQ tracks.

ETF Name Symbol Annual Yield
SPDR DJ Wilshire Intl Real Estate RWX 8.43%
iShares Dow Jones US Real Estate IYR 3.54%
SPDR S&P 500 SPY 1.42%
PowerShares HighYield Dividend Achievers PEY 3.94%
PowerShares Intl Dividend Achievers PID 2.77%
Vanguard High Dividend Yield Indx VYM 2.58%
iShares MSCI Emerging Markets Index EEM 0.77%
Vanguard Dividend Appreciation VIG 1.99%
iShares Dow Jones Select Dividend Index DVY 3.4%
iShares Dow Jones Intl Select Div Idx IDV 3.96%
SPDR S&P Dividend SDY 2.61%
iShares MSCI EAFE Index EFA 0.93%
First Trust Value Line Dividend Index FVD 2.68%
iShares S&P U.S. Preferred Stock Index PFF 7.39%

From the above table, it is interesting to note that both the top and bottom ETFs (RWX and PFF) have the highest dividend yields. It is also telling to note that U.S. dividend stock ETFs are ranked lower than the broad base stock index (SPY), again illustrating a risk appetite rather than quality or dividend driven (however, one should take note that the difference is not that significant).

To summarize, REITs as a group delivered stellar returns in 2010 and dividend stock ETFs continued to do well. Preferred stocks started to recover a bit, though still being a laggard.
