All assets are classified to two classes: risky assets and fixed income (stable) assets.
Risky assets include the following assets:
- Equities (stocks): US, international and emerging market stocks,
- REITs: US and international Real Estate Investment Trusts,
- Commodities: Industrial Metals, Gold, Oil, Agricultural, .. etc.,
- High Yield (Junk) Bonds: Low grade corporate bonds
Fixed income assets include
- Government bonds: short, intermediate and long term treasury bonds and GNMA,
- Investment Grade bonds: short, intermediate and long term investment corporate bonds,
- International bonds: Sovereign and corporate investment grade bonds,
- Cash: Money markets
The Risk Profile number represents the target percentage allocation of fixed income in your portfolio. For example, the default risk profile number is 18. That means 18% should be allocated to fixed income and 82% should be allocated to risky assets
Your Risk Profile is determined based on your expected years to retirement and risk tolerance. The risk tolerance could be one of the following:
- Very Conservative
- Conservative
- Moderatge
- Aggressive
- Very Aggressive
The more aggressive you are, the more will be allocated to risky assets. The longer you expect to retire, the more will be allocated to risky assets too.
Your risk profile number will be adjusted every year.
You could always overwrite the risk profile number when customizing a model portfolio.
