Country ETFs Trend: Global Markets Remain Mixed, weighed by Korean Tensions and Europe Debt Concerns

12/22/2010 0 comments

Last week, major global indices saw their trend scores lowered, with few bright spots. Markets in Asia edged lower on geopolitical tension in the Korean peninsula and shares in Europe also dropped on continued worries over regions’ sovereign debt woes. More details can be found in MyPlanIQ 360 Degree Market View.

We make the following observations about last week's development:

  • The Taiwan Index Fund (EWT) continues to shine and topped our following table with the highest trend score. Shares in Taiwan ended last week with a fresh over two-and-a-half-year high, as upcoming trade talks with China fuelled hopes. Cross-strait ties have improved since Taiwan President Ma Ying-jeou took office in May 2008, dropping the pro-independence stance of his predecessor. Amid stronger relations with China, the positive momentum is expected to drive stocks higher.
  • South Korea (EWY) gave up the second spot in our table with its trend scored dropped to 12.74% compared 14.03% a week earlier. Volatility is up in South Korean equity market and posted their third straight week of outflows on continued uneasiness about geopolitical tensions in the region.
  • Spain (EWP) stayed at the bottom of our table with a -6.53% trend score. Investors have been concerned that Spain may be forced to seek a bailout, which will trigger another wave of panic in financial markets.
